Here are some answers to the most common questions we in the Stone Yard Department get asked:

How to lay stone properly & drainage issues
We find many customers asking us about flagstone patio’s and proper procedure in laying natural stone.

STEP #1 Excavate the area down 8″ depending on how bad your drainage is make sure area is level.

STEP #2  Lay 6″ of  3/4″ clear gravel and compact with a plate compactor. Lay good quality landscape fabric over the clear gravel. Lay screening over the landscape fabric and compact and wet as you go. The depth is determined by the thickness of the flagstone you are using. The ideal thickness of flagstone for a patio is 1″ – 1 1/2″.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask our Stone Yard Department staff. It is best to get it right the first time than to end up with a lot more rock, stone, or mulch than you need.
